As promised, an update! This time regarding D&D.
Last post, I mentioned that I am running a one-shot session at a convention for some fellow Critters (Critical Role fans). Below the read more is a homebrew race I created as a result of this: the Moggy.
I opened up the racial options for the one-shot to include all of the playable races released by Wizards of the Coast, and asked players to message me if they wanted to play something different. One of the players did get in touch, asking if she could play the homebrew race Neko, as outlined on D&D Wiki.
Looking at the race, I was worried that it was unbalanced compared to the races released by Wizards of the Coast. Some traits made sense, but others seemed overpowered, and some just made no sense at all. Cat Nap, for example, gives neko PCs an ability similar to the the elven Trance, allowing them to sleep only four hours a day. However, anyone with a cat knows that cats sleep anywhere from 15 to 20 hours a day! So really, if you want to address how much sleep a neko should get, they should have to sleep 14 hours a day, and suffer a point of exhaustion if they don’t get enough sleep.
I spoke with the player, and we decided to work out our own version that was a little more balanced. We used tabaxi race traits as the basis, reasoning that the race we were creating were the descendants of the tabaxi. What we ended up with was the keety, a specialised race for the player’s character for this one-shot, as there were some traits from the neko that she really wanted (like the ability to turn into a cat).
After we settled on that, I decided to refine the race a little more, eventually ending up with the moggy and three subtypes: domestic moggies, familiar moggies, and feral moggies.
Feel free to play-test this race! If you do try it, please let me know how it goes for you in a comment…respectful feedback is greatly appreciated.
Other updates on the horizon: a half-elf variant, a coup de grace action, and a homebrew campaign setting.
